Taichung Tri-City Tour 18 April 2009
We had an epic tour on Saturday 18Apr … and here below is the history as I know it. Of course some players may argue that my knowledge about history is somewhat different … if not limited.
First it is important to note that it was a Tri-City 10's comp @ Fen Jia Universty in Tai-Chung on Saturday, 18 April 2009 … all is accurate until now … the rest is the history as per me.

After much anticipation, the Tri-Team 10's finally got underway. Originally the ex-pat team from Kao-Hsiung (AKA Pig & Whistle Barbarians) was keen but they had to pull out because they just couldn't put 10 headless rugby players under the heat. Too bad.
For once, everybody was fairly "on-time" and there were no drama … and we even looked fit for a Baboon team (not so much drinking the previous night, good efforts guys!!!). An anonymous person decided that the entire team will have to take the bus … and after 2h 40 minutes of "slow” bus ride, we finally arrived at the battle ground … and for those who wanted to take a good rest during this long bus ride, Sid was laughing far too loudly for that … anyway we were all eager for action, all except Evan the Ref, whose arrived late … for ones, it was not the Baboons.
Anyway, we arrived far too early for us and we could have had a full hour to warm-up. We used it to stay in the cool shadow and not warming-up at all … why so, we could get tired and even get injured.

ACTION.

In real typical Baboons' fashion, we started slow and subsequently paid for our mistakes with a loss to the Teletubbies. They had a strong and heavy forwards line-up, who were actually able to get to most breakdowns in good time. Although our backs seemed to have the edge over their backline, their pack was able to get crucial turnovers at ruck time. We hold up most of the time thanks to a wonderful defense from all the players, forwards and backs.

The 2nd game we were up against the inexperienced Fen-Jia students (bolstered by a couple Tubbies). It was a little easier and we were also more into the game. Also we saw our great forward Tom scoring a winger try after a 50m run … really sweet.

After the win, we carried our form into the 3rd game. The greatest game of the day. The Tubbies were caught napping a few times and one of our best players of the day and try scoring machine - Tristan - dotted down 3 times. Slow motion action … the Forwards won back the ball from our own kick-off. Then Cokes took the ball and performed an inspired kick to the opposite corner caught by Tristan … TRY!!!! It is important to note that there was no grass after the try line, despite this small detail, Tristan still dived to catch the ball and scored. He deliberately lost some skin in the process and waken up an old knee injury. But this could not stop Tristan and he just retuned on the ground like nothing happened … anybody has a spare brain for Tristan? And guess what, this happened 2 times within 3mn. Respect to the forward for winning back the ball from our kick-off, respect to Cokes for his visionary pass, respect for Tristan not respecting his body for the Boons.

We had to win our last regular match to ensure a final against the Tubbies. The university team got some help from their old boys … they did play a lot better.
However we could see some tremendous skills from one of our best player … Cokes playing a penalty on the 5m line of our opponents, kicking the ball to its own nose and … knock-on!!! Thanks for the laughing time!!!! But despite this, we hold it up and we won.

Try: Spencer, Johan, Arno, Mitch, Conv: Johan * 2, Eric

So there was a final. Everybody played really hard, fair and clean (apart from a Tubby got sin-bined 3 minutes for tackling without the ball … which could have led to a try) But like our first game, their pack turned the heat on and they scored the only try of the match about 6 minutes into the 13 minute game despite a strong defense from the entire team. Then we had the possession and territory. We stayed 5 minutes in their 10 meters; but we just could not convert our chances. Everybody emptied their tanks, the team was exhausted and unfortunately we could not come out as winner on this occasion.

END OF THE DAY, BEER TIME.

The player of the day comes to Andrew!!!!
We have shown a lot of composure, strong team spirit and awesome skills. It was a great day. Let’s work harder the next 3 weeks as the next tri-city on 09May must be ours.

Thanks to Robbie and Kevin of the Tubbies for organizing this tournament and Evan for keeping the game in fantastic order (and the other referee … no idea who he was). It is our turn to host the Tri-Team tournament on Sat, 09 May 2009 and I hope you all can come and play / watch!

Players:
