The last game of sevens and the last Baboons act of 2008 was a marvelous spectacle with everything in it. Passion, skill, determination, stand-out moments and perhaps a bit of man-loving in between. So much for the opposition.
We as a group consisted of Anders, myself, Eric, Andrew, David Yang, KG (Bison), Shaun Bernie P and the ever-tardy Kelvin B plus a last minute cameo from Hank. The first try took one back line movement and it was a pretty good one cuts and switches to open the scoring. Unfortunately it wasn't us. We started with a hiss and a roar taking possession from the first kick off and immediately handing back to the opposition from the ensuing knock-on by that dobbing in basket case Andrew. They scored straight after. The rest of the game was a blur but there were some times where we did look like contenders but we ran a bit out of steam near the end going down 5-1.
We took our time gelling as a unit and I think we'll be set like a descent custard by about mid 2010! We did however get some retribution by scoring a try mid way through the second half with some sturdy work up front by Kelvin and player of the tournament Bernie P laying on a try for Eric to complete.
It was too bad were hit with injuries and illness last week as I am sure that with a little more training and one or two more healthier players on the field we could have taken the game away from the youngsters.
Needless to say we will be back a stronger, healthier, fitter, better drilled and hungrier for the win in 2009!
All the best to you lads over Xmas if I don't see you at training this Thursday. Also, it was great to have Pete back in town - thanks for coming mate! We were all ecstatic when we heard you were coming back and it took a lot of self control not to full on decent bear hug on Saturday. Have a good break in the land of Obamania.
And finally to Mike Smith, his lovely wife and baby! Awesome mate, sorry for not getting time to congratulate you personally on the newest extension to your family. The first beer(s) will be on me and the lads on the first chance we get in the new year! Good work you two from all of us!!!
